Eleventh Sunday of Pentecost
MISSION STATEMENT
The Church of the Holy Spirit (Episcopal) shares the love of Jesus through being a friendly community, participating in liturgically rich worship experiences, and by empowering individual ministries.
WORSHIP NEWS
WELCOME NEWCOMERS
You are welcome to join us at the communion rail when it is time to receive Holy Communion. Our ushers and any member are happy to assist if you have any questions during our worship. Jesus loves you! We are glad you are here.
To Help You: Sound enhancement ear phones and large print service books are available in the narthex. Ask an usher for assistance.
For The Sending Forth of Lay Eucharistic Visitors
DEACON: In the name of this congregation, I send you forth bearing these holy gifts, that (those to whom you go) may share with us in the communion of Christ’s body and blood.
CONGREGATION: We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup.
Got questions about our worship? Blue cards are in your pew holders. Ask question on card and put it in the collection plate. Each week we will briefly look at a question for discussion.
FELLOWSHIP
Kitchen Cleaning Volunteers are needed to help clean the kitchen on Monday, August 20, (9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.). We will clean the refrigerator, stove tops, cupboard fronts, pantry, etc. Let’s get our kitchen “sparkling” before our Open House. Call Charlotte Austin at 292-1179 to Volunteer!

This ministry is enjoyed by all members of our church. The coffee hour teams provide refreshments and clean the kitchen after the 10:30 service. A new roster will be made up shortly. Please contact Charlotte Austin (292-1179) if you are interested in serving as a coffee hour host/hostess.
Attention Sunday Hostess Groups: Please check the schedule for your Sunday and have a designated person to remind each committee member, that it is the groups Sunday to bring snacks. Thanks
Newcomer’s Parish Welcome: Every 4th Sunday of the month, all new -
comers and guests are invited to join Fr. Scott in the chapel for an informal parish orientation and church tour. Questions are always welcome! We will meet in the chapel following the 10:30 worship.
Karen Leigh will be the 8am Coffee Hour host today. Team are the hosts following the 10:30 service.
Calling all crafters! Please join us (Carrie Feingold and Jane Stangl) in the
undercroft on Wednesday’s from 4:00 - 6:45pm (or any part of that time) now through September 19. Bring a project to work on, socialize, share some how-to’s. This would be a great time to work on items you plan to sell at the Fall Festival.
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Sunday Morning Adult Sunday School: Life long Episcopalians, newcomers
or somewhere in between.....Deacon Hank will be leading a book discussion “Welcome to Sunday”. This book offers a step-by-step introduction to the Sunday Liturgy, with an emphasis on how lay people can participate. The class will meet in the Adult Sunday School Room between the 8am and 10:30am services. Deacon Hank says “The good news is, we buy the books, we don’t take roll, you don’t have to participate in the discussions...Just Attend.” Do you bring your children to Sunday School? Well, now you can attend Sunday School too! DEACON HANK WANTS YOU. Sign up at the Parish Picnic or on the clipboard in the undercroft.
Thursday evening Book Study Group continues to read Amazing Grace, by Kathleen Norris who writes about the reclaiming of her Christian faith after 20 years away from the church and her difficulties with what she calls the “scary” words of Christianity. We meet on Thursday nights from 7-8pm. Join us if you can. The book lends itself to joining at anytime. Please see Deacon Diana or Toby Wingert for further information.
Wednesday Morning Bible Class: this week on Wednesday, after the Eucharist, there will be a short video and review of the study of our Book of Common Prayer. Everyone is welcome. You will not be handicapped by coming in the middle of the study. (In fact, you may help us with fresh questions and ideas). The more, the merrier!
The Call to Ministry: You have a call to ministry by virtue of your baptism. Ministry may involve many things: listening to another’s story, caring for the young and old or those who are ill, working for justice and peace, seeking to create a healthy and safe environment, creating a home, praying for others, teaching someone to read, or feeding and clothing those who have special needs. In a word, ministry involves “action” as well as presence. Ministry also involves “being,” as being present with a person in crisis, being compassionate, and being open to the possibilities of God working in new unexpected ways and places. Ministry may happen in your work or play. The effects of ministry may be seen at unexpected moments or when you have worked hard to achieve something beneficial. In short, ministry is always a possibility. We are ministers when we offer ourselves as an action of will as well as when we act unconsciously out of the core of our being. EFM exists to help you in this journey of exploration and to provide you with resources for your ministry.
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AND YOUTH
“Wednesday Journeys”
The following is the mission statement for our Wednesday Journeys:
“St. Luke’s, St. Martha’s and Church of the Holy Spirit commit ourselves to a combined effort to better serve our youths, grades 6-12, in a safe, fun and challenging Wednesday night program that empowers their spiritual and personal growth. Pray for this wonderful program for our youth.”
The kickoff for Wednesday Journeys will be August 29, here at Holy Spirit, from 6:30 - 8pm. The first Wednesday Journeys meeting will be September 12. We encourage all parents and their children in 7-12 grade to attend the Kickoff Meeting. Both adults and youth will get an overview of what to expect throughout the year. A result of an Alleluia Fund Grant this program is a tri-church effort. St. Luke’s in Plattsmouth, St. Martha’s in Papillion, and Church of the Holy Spirit have joined together to create a program that incorporates spiritual guidance, growth and fun while providing a safe environment for the peer fellowship of our children. Please sign up for the Kickoff on the clipboard in the undercroft.

A Red Cross babysitting course will be held here at CHS on Saturday,
August 18, from 8:30am until 5pm. I have made arrangements to have this class so that any of our youth ages 11 and up can be qualified to help in the nursery or with any of our projects here at CHS involving young children. The age for the course is 11-14, however older teens can take it. In the afternoon from 1-5 will be the CPR part. (The CPR must be renewed every 2 years). I need six teens in order to make the class go. Any adults wishing to renew their CPR may take the afternoon portion. Please let friends know about this. The cost for Non-Parishioners for the whole class is $35.00 and CPR is $20. Please sign up in the undercroft or e-mail Kristi Smith at stevenpsmith@cox.net.
If you are working with children here at CHS you must have the Diocese Safe Child Training. Our Insurance Carrier requires it. One will be offered in the next few weeks at St. Luke’s in Plattsmouth. As soon as there is a date and time it will be published. Please try to attend. Questions? See Kristi Smith.
CHS is once again going to participate in the Arrows to Aerospace Parade.
Hheld on Saturday, August 25, it begins at 10 am. We are going to use the theme from Bible School “Gods Miracles” focusing on feeding the 5,000. We have a flat bed trailer 16 feet long and 7 feet wide. Ruth Tussey has graciously given us a design to work from. We need builders, and folks to put all the pieces together on Friday evening the 24, and we need riders and walkers. Please sign up on the clipboard in the undercroft to help us and be part of this exciting evangelism opportunity. We want as many of our children and youth to participate as possible. Other needs are big bags of candy, and one gallon ice cream containers to carry the candy in. We also need cases of bottled water. Any donations would be greatly appreciated. The candy and gallon containers can be set inside the Christian Ed Office on the counter, and the water placed on the floor. The water is for the walkers. Thanks so much for your continued support. Questions or comments should be directed to the members of the committee: Kristi Smith, Joan Wood, Wendy Lee, Doug Clark, or Jennifer Wilson.
