Announcements for the week of November 30, 2008

The vestry of the Church of the Holy Spirit is proud to announce that we have called the Reverend Thomas Jones ( “Father Tom”) as the 6th priest to serve as rector of our parish. After about 8 months of work using tools that came as a result of a parish wide survey, along with focus groups, the search committee was able to recommend Father Tom to the vestry.

We are excited about Father Tom’s joining our Parish as he has an excellent background that blends leadership and management experience as a retired Air Force officer with proven pastoral youth capabilities as a 2nd career Episcopal priest. Most recently he served as curate under Father Grant Wiseman at St. Andrews, Omaha, where he directly contributed to the significant growth of their parish. At St. Andrew’s, he worked with Christian Education and Youth, sponsored mission trips and ministered to the parish. He is local, knows our community and the Diocese and will relate well to parishioners of all ages.

This weekend, November 29th and 30th, will be Father Tom’s first Sunday to celebrate with us. We cordially invite all of our parish to come and greet Father Tom and his wife Sharon.

If you are or have been an active five o’clock communicant, please join Father Tom and Sharon at the 5 o’clock service and for coffee and cookies after the service.

There will be time after each service on Sunday morning to enjoy refreshments and meet both our new rector and his wife

Father Tom has the strength and vitality to help us grow and prosper for years to come. We encourage you to come and start this journey with us this weekend.

Senior Warden

YOUTH
What a beautiful fall day we had for this year’s Youth Rake and Run
, a service project run by the CHS Youth Group. This year, we were able to provide raking services to 4 CHS families who needed assistance with their leaf collection. We raked nearly 70 bags of leaves in 4 hours and also enjoyed Subway for lunch and ice cream after. Our small but hardworking crew included Sabrina and Josh Reynolds-Wallace, Amanda, Emily and Chris Brockinton, Shiloh Thacker, Amber, Crystal and Myrt Kunkel, Wendy Lee, and Della and Jennifer Wilson. Thanks to all who participated – we’re proud of our Youth!

Update on Estimate of Giving Collection
We began our collection of Estimates of Giving cards from the membership on Nov 1 & 2at the Consecration Services. To date we have collected 45 member estimates for a total of $134,164 and are expecting 19 more from members who traditionally turn in estimates. If the 19 we are expecting come in, that will give us approximately $160,590 for an income projection. This is a higher projection than last year, but given we expect this year’s expenses to be higher than 2008, we could be facing a shortfall in contributions versus expenses for 2009. This is our church and as a membership body we are the givers and sustainers of God’s House on 1305 Thomas Drive. If you usually turn in an estimate of giving, we are counting on your estimate coming in. Otherwise, please consider submitting an estimate as new (or renewed) practice for 2009. It will make a difference with our financial planning for 2009.

Mark your calendars! Sunday, Nov 23 after the 10:30 service there will be a farewell/retirement reception for Mother Ruth and our Music Director Marian Barnett. Two envelopes are available for contributions. See Kristi Smith or Lynda Wyant.

Be Bold!! Join the greeting Ministry!! Members of this ministry connect with people by making them feel welcome as they enter church. The goal is to welcome every single person who walks through the door with a warm handshake and smile. You can sign up on the clipboard located on the clipboard table. The time commitment is minimal: a briefing on the new greeter process and being “at the door” 15 minutes prior to the service you signed up for. Make a difference in someone’s life today!
